Bunkie on the Hill
The smallest in a collection of cabins scattered across four family properties, a Bunkie on the Hill serves as a space of respite for a family-oriented client in Muskoka. The Bunkie, tucked into the trees at the top of a steep slope, was designed to provide a quiet space away from the action of the multi-generational family cottages below.
A contemporary interpretation of the traditional A-frame shape evokes the quintessential cabin in the woods, differentiated by shifted roof volumes. Reminiscent of the overlapping layers of shale rock in the surrounding landscape, the split roof design features two intersecting gables that create opportunities for window openings where the roof volumes separate. These geometric windows allow for curated views of the treetops on one side and lake below on the other and invite natural light to flood the interior of the cabin, reflecting off the sharp roof angles and creating dramatic lines and shadows. The cabin’s split roof design also generates disti ...
Copper Harbor
The Copper Harbor house is perched on the shore of Lake Superior, nestled in a forested lot on the edge of the Upper Peninsula of Lake Michigan. Built to withstand the harshest conditions, this house is a place to shelter from snow and wind: a private refuge built to experience the natural beauties of the site.
The clients desired a modern, streamlined retreat to escape the city. The house aims to create a feeling of protection within while still opening to the beautiful landscape beyond. Two volumes are formed by metal shells which extend toward the water. The solidity of each shell is contrasted with a wall of glass providing light, directing views, and extending the living space out on cantilevered decks toward the water. A linear gasket serves as an entry to the house, a connection between the two shells, and a division between public and private spaces. One shell contains the public areas: kitchen, living, and dining, while the other holds the sleeping quarters and bathrooms. A thi ...
Toiletowa
TOILETOWA is an architecture of circulation and regeneration that makes this visible. More than just a toilet, it was built as an environmental education space attached to the headquarters of Ishizaka Corp in Oak Forest, which recycles industrial waste and serves as a model for a future waste-free, recycling-oriented society.
It is a wooden building consisting of a toilet building with a circular rammed earth wall made of recycled soil NS-10 developed by Ishizaka Corp,, and a tank building that shows the process of perfect recycling and circulating wastewater by combined fermentation of microorganisms. To reduce the environmental impact, the foundation is made of crushed stone instead of concrete. - Made using wooden stakes. With the theme of recycling in the materials used, the interior walls and earthern floors of the toilet building are made of almost recycled materials of soil, wood, and glass. The hand wash and toilet bowls are also made of recycled wood chips.

A Californian Classic Reimagined
Sydney architect David Parsons has revitalised a classic Californian bungalow in the
leafy suburb of Rosebery. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for seamless
indoor-outdoor living, David, principal of David Parsons Architect,
transformed the home into a sun-drenched sanctuary, taking ‘lifestyle’ to a whole
new level.
This comprehensive renovation fulfilled an ambitious vision. "The clients desired an
additional level with two bedrooms and an ensuite, a redesigned open-plan living
area that flowed onto the pool area, and a new double garage," he elaborates.
Balancing the client's vision with heritage and height restrictions coupled with
ensuring ample sunlight for the pool were key challenges. A meticulous design
process, aided by 3D modelling, resulted in a solution that met all requirements.
The upper-level addition features a gable/hip roof design optimised to preserve the
pool's sunlight. The existing living and kitchen area were replaced with a brand-new
open-plan space tha ...

The Terra Cotta Workshop is a complex of spaces shaped by brick walls: two long folded walls and a circular wall surrounding the orginal brick kiln - an architecture, that existed from more than 20 Years ago, has been preserved and is the core of the new workshop.
The craftsmen’s daily activities have maintained like a habit since the presence of former workshop. New architecture came later and was formed from the process of observing light, wind direction, footsteps, sitting position, walking style, and how to turn to find the appropriate source of light to make sculptural works. All these activities are condensed and arranged into basic geometric spaces.

House with a Crown
The task was to expand the living space for a young family into an existing 2-story single-family house. In order to keep the burden on the existing building with an additional floor low and to enable a quick construction time, the extension was constructed using timber construction.
Wood as a natural material was specifically made visible on the facade and in the interior.
A large glass facade in the attic offers a magnificent view and brings nature into the open loft.

Kunstpalast Düsseldorf Museum | 2024 | Sieber Architekten
Built within less than one year between 1925 and 1926 according to Wilhelm Kreis’ extensive plans, the Ehrenhof contains an ensemble of cultural buildings. The perception of the Kunstpalast was previously characterized by 2 existing separate wings. Both buildings were now connected under a common name.
The imbalance between the exhibition wing in the east and the collection wing in the west, resulting from the demolition of the original Kunstpalast, which remained preserved behind the Kreis façade, and the subsequent new construction by Ungers in the early noughties, was exacerbated by large areas of the collection wing becoming inaccessible to the public due to water damage and structural problems. With the additional orientation of the new exhibition wing in the lower foyer to the east and the partially removed connection between the collection and temporary exhibition spaces, the two wings of the building were no longer perceptible as one unit.
When we began planning the new Kunstp ...

HAY Boutique Hotel and SPA by Edem Family | 2022 | YOD Group
HAY Boutique Hotel and SPA by Edem Family in the heart of the ski resort Bukovel has two restaurants and a local SPA. That is the place for slowing down, uniting with nature, and immersing yourself in refined Carpathian authenticity.
The concept of the hotel grew out of admiration for the luxurious Carpathian nature. The botanical atlas includes 88 varieties of local herbs. Hence the hotel restaurants' names are 88 Vinotheque and 88 Daily Local. On hot summer days, the sun burns the grasses on the meadows, turning them into fragrant hay that gently rustles underfoot. This hay gave the hotel its name and became a central theme in its design.
The hotel building offers a 360-degree view of the Carpathian landscape. You can see a different part of the mountain slopes from the windows of each room. The building is organically integrated into the landscape and resembles a rock with cascades of plants. Local trees, grasses, strawberries, and blackberries decorate the facade, hotel terraces, an ...

Cotton Park | 2023 | AIM Architecture
Changzhou, an ancient city with a history of more than 3,000 years, has reached over One Trillion in GDP since 2023. It has transformed into a captivating destination, embracing a more intimate city experience and prioritizing quality over quantity. This community project by Cotton Park is the regeneration of 4 oil tanks - a vision that aligns with our aspiration to bring urban spaces to life.
Our goal was to breathe new life into the city and foster community engagement by establishing a place where people could gather. Simultaneously, we aimed to create a versatile place capable of hosting various cultural events and gatherings, enriching the local experience. The four tanks possess a distinctive quality due to their initial purpose, primarily designed to facilitate industrial processes rather than being centered around the human scale.
During our first site visit, a ray of sunlight gracefully descended from the top of the silos, casting a flawless ellipse of light on the stained wal ...
Crest Guesthouse | 2023 | Mork-Ulnes Architects
To create a small guesthouse and rental unit on a steep hillside property in Marin County CA, Mork-Ulnes Architects took the foundation from an old garage. They built a new Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) on the exact footprint of the old garage.
The building’s sharply angled roofline mirrors the site's slope and gives a high clerestory window light above the cabinetry wall, while a playful flip in the roof provides a punched window from the loft viewing the trees. Cement board was used to provide a fire resistant cladding in the wooded hillside, and also for ease of maintenance. Due to the incredibly steep hillside, a deck was added on the front of the ADU to add more usable exterior space to take advantage of the mild California climate, essentially doubling the ADU’s usable area.
Designing for the utmost effective square feet (411 sq. ft. / 38 square meters), flexible programming was deployed: a rolling kitchen island can be moved in or outside when space or utility is needed, and a ...

Floating Hotel | 2023 | MORE Architecture
In Anji, a rural region three hours from Shanghai, MORE Architecture designed a boutique hotel that seems to float above the hills. The building, situated in the middle of the mountainous bamboo forests, establishes an immersive relationship with nature.
Over the past 40 years, China has changed from a rural to an urban society. Now, the country has the largest and most densely populated cities in the world. After decades of industrialization and urbanization, China's vast middle class has time and money to spend. Growing domestic tourism is causing Chinese city dwellers to flee their megacities on weekends. They are attracted by rural life: back to nature.
The 'floating hotel' fits in seamlessly with this demand. It is the first building in Dachangping, a mountainous area in the south of Anji. This bamboo-rich region forms the green heart of the most urbanized area in the world: the Yangtze River Delta.
Under this folded roof, made of zinc, the architects created four different transpa ...
